SEAMEO BIOTROP is a Center under SEAMEO (South-East Asian Ministers of Education Organization) which was founded officially on 6 February 1968, and formerly located at Bogor Botanical Garden. The establishment was based on an agreement among the Ministers of Education of South-East Asia poured in a SEAMEO Charter in the year 1965. The nations of SEAMEO member are Indonesia, Brunei Darusalam, Combodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippina, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, and also 6 Associate Member Countries those are Australia, New Zealand, Canada, The Netherland, Germany and French. In the year 1997, SEAMEO BIOTROP was appointed as the Research and Development Center for Tropical Biology under Bogor Agricultural University through a Decree of Minister of Education and Culture No. 0186/9/1997. The decision was strenghtened by a Decree of Minister of Education and Culture No. 099/O/1997 about the appointment of Bogor Agricultural University as the Main Institution for The Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization for Tropical Biology (SEAMEO BIOTROP).

One of the main objectives of SEAMEO is to improve human resource development and education, specially in South-East Asia populating around 500 million people and almost a half residing in Indonesia. BIOTROP which is located in Indonesia constitutes a Center under SEAMEO having activities on researches and trainings on Tropical Biology, and also the biggest and eldest one beside SEARCA and INNOTECH in Philippine.

In its growth, in the year 2000 Services Laboratory was established as one part of the SEAMEO BIOTROP having duty as service activities of examination laboratory based on a decision of Governing Board Meeting of SEAMEO BIOTROP which has 10 member countries of South-East Asia, in Phnon Phen, Combodia on 3 - 5 October 2000. The existence of this Laboratory is strenghtened by a Decree of SEAMEO BIOTROP Director No. 212.1/Dir-SK/SL/V/2003 about the Determining of Organization Structure and Personnel Formation of Services Laboratory of SEAMEO BIOTROP Bogor. Now, Services Laboratory has obtained a Certificate Accreditation as an examination laboratory according to SNI: 17025 - 2005 from the National Accreditation Committee.
